Our Story

At the foundation of Heartsong Herbs...
is an immense love for the natural world and the enduring healing traditions of plant medicine. Through potent tinctures, seasonal workshops, and spring plant sales, we help people reconnect with the plants that have supported human well-being for thousands of years. We believe people-plant relationships are living traditions, and our work is devoted to keeping herbalism accessible so these traditions remain intact and continue to thrive.
The roots of Heartsong Herbs began in the sandy soil of south Georgia. Founder Dana Nivens was digging holes in the dirt before she could walk. Later in life she filled those holes with seeds as an organic vegetable farmer, beginning a conversation with plants that would deepen and change many times over.

After becoming a mother in 2010, Dana felt a strong calling to herbalism through the beloved Tulsi plant, and began her studies with Master Herbalist Patricia Howell at the BotanoLogos School of Herbal Studies. That education gave Dana language, structure, and deeper reverence for what the plants had already begun to teach her: that herbalism is practical, relational, and rooted in a deep relationship with the land. It continues to inform Heartsong’s approach to medicine making, education, and the belief that healing grows through relationship as much as remedy.
Heartsong Herbs grew from the union of Dana’s two great passions, farming and herbalism, and from the belief that healthy soil grows healthy plants, and healthy plants help grow strong, healthy people. Since 2017, Heartsong Herbs has been bringing this belief to life in the greater Athens community and beyond, growing herbs, making tinctures, touching lives, and helping people build meaningful relationships with the plants that support them.

Exciting News
2026 Farm Update
After 20 years of farming on other people's land, Dana and her family are finally starting the farm of their dreams. While this new farm takes shape, the herbs for Heartsong’s tinctures are being grown just down the road from Athens by dear friends and fellow farmers Jeni and Nicolas Donk of Crystal Organic Farm. This close partnership allows Heartsong’s core values to remain intact: tinctures made from regenerative, organically grown, fresh herbs harvested close to home. Heartsong will resume full herb production in the spring of 2027.
